| Game not over for Barrie Arena; Former councillor hopes to save rink
A voice from Barrie's past is trying to give the city's oldest hockey rink a future. Sam Cancilla, a former city councillor, says Barrie (Dunlop) Arena should not be decommissioned and demolished to make way for a new fire station. He says hockey arenas are more than buildings or ice rinks, but are part of the fabric of a community and help remedy sociological problems. "Somebody's got to present it in that light," Cancilla said. "If we are going to lose it, people should know what they are losing. "We've got to think about the people who live in this area." Cancilla says residents in this part of Barrie are not rich, but still deserve to know what's at stake. "You wouldn't get away with this (closing an arena) in a well-to-do neighbourhood," he said.

Derek and Mairi McComisky, both 43, are set to shun the rat race in the style of the popular 1970s comedy series starring Richard Briers and Felicity Kendal as Tom and Barbara Good. They have submitted a planning application to West Lothian Council for a cashmere goat farm, complete with visitor centre. The venture at Holehouseburn in Fauldhouse is the start of a five-year plan to jump off the treadmill and put something back into the local community. The McComiskys hope their haulage business, which they have built up over the past 15 years to include eight arctic lorries, will be taken over by their sons. Mr McComisky said: "I've just got fed up of the lorries, there's too much competition now and, after 15 years, I was just looking for a better way of life.
